I don't know anything about Serviio so don't know how this changes the options in Kodi. This does not replace any of the original file data but is used as the displayed data in Kodi. If you can, give Serviio a quick try (its a painless server for a quick test). There are basically 2 (/3) ways that are being used at the moment. Serving external subtitles is not part of the UPnP specs, and different vendors have therefore started using different methods. Note that the job of the scrapers in Kodi is to San and index your movie folder, and use its scrapers to download the 'correct' metadata as it builds the Kodi library information. 2) XBMC does not support external subtitles through UPnP. This will be mostly the case, because Internet providers usually offer much lower upload than download speeds, and your Serviio server has to stream the data into the Internet. You can the search/browse for them as SMB shares in Kodi. If you are accessing Serviio from a remote (Internet) location, you might have to select Medium or Low setting, depending on your upstream Internet connection speed. If you want to use 'normal' network sharing to allow this machine to access files on another machine you would need to ensure you have the remote folders configured to be shared with the network. I'd be tempted to uninstall your current version and do a clean install of the latest version. It sounds like your previous failed attempts might be responsible for the 'empty' menu options on the menu bar. To upgrade Kodi just go to there website and download the latest version and run the installer again. This is not helpful, and when I have everything working satisfactorily I must look for a way to stop it happening. It then proceeds to show me a poster or a DVD cover of the movie it thinks I own. While I appreciate the cleverness of Kodi's ability to find and present information from the internet, the program often decides to rename files, changing my own names into what I presume are the nearest "proper" equivalent it can find. I struggled for far too long trying to add files using Windows network and failed completely. Can you point me to a non-technical guide to updating? Which I'm afraid means absolutely nothing to me, something that's true of a good deal of Kodi information. To update Kodi when a new version is released, just do a general system/package or use the following commands in the terminal (or via SSH): I looked for an update option from within Kodi but couldn't see anything.
